As ideias são poderosas quando atraem gente para aquilo a que poderíamos chamar “objetos de desejo político”. Coisas que as pessoas querem conquistar em comum. A democracia europeia, objeto do Manifesto de Ventotene, continua por cumprir. Voltemos a propô-la, como a Europa Social, uma segurança social europeia, impostos às multinacionais para apoio reforçado aos hospitais, às universidades e à investigação — tudo o que possa apaixonar as pessoas e fazê-las querer ter um futuro comum. A diferença em relação a Renzi, Merkel e Hollande é impressionante. Os líderes dos três maiores países fundadores da UE são poderosos, mas não têm qualquer ideia de futuro.
