É difícil não ceder à tentação de pensar que, enquanto escrevia Cem anos de solidão, Gabriel García Márquez não estivesse possuído de toda a sabedoria do mundo.
Gabriel García Márquez escreveu vários livros excelentes — dos que li, O amor nos tempos de cólera, a novela Crónica de uma morte anunciada — e um livro incomparável, Cem anos de solidão. Sem esse livro, ele seria um grande escritor. Com esse livro, foi o autor de um dos melhores romances do século XX, talvez o melhor de todo o pós-guerra. A tal ponto que a pergunta é se ainda é possível escrever um romance daqueles.
Para quem leu esse livro do gelo até às formigas (e quem o fez sabe do que falo) o que nele há de único é uma surpreendente segurança de linguagem desde as primeiras linhas. Como se o romance se encaminhasse para ser aquilo, e não pudesse ser outra coisa: a invenção de um mundo novo, palavra após palavra.
É uma sensação estranha. Nota-se do escritor a maestria, mas também parece que o escritor não poderia senão seguir o caminho que o livro lhe deu.
Parte disso é porque o livro é, de facto, sobre a invenção de um mundo novo: não só o continente novo americano, não só a nova nação colombiana, e não só a aldeia de Macondo que é o centro do romance, mas um mundo novo simplesmente, um lugar de tal forma inédito que “a maior parte das coisas não tinha ainda nome e era necessário apontar para elas”. A aldeia é uma sociedade primordial, de pioneiros, habitada quase só pela mesma família Buendía, e visitada uma vez por ano por uma trupe de ciganos, que trazem as novidades da civilização. O gelo, o íman, a lupa.
É como se tudo estivesse a ser vivido pela primeira vez. E de certa forma está sempre a ser vivido pela primeira vez, por causa de outro elemento essencial do livro: o esquecimento. Entre massacres que apenas uma pessoa lembra, uma epidemia de amnésia coletiva na aldeia e o próprio esquecimento recorrente do destino da família Buendía pelas suas sete gerações de homens, é o esquecimento que complementa o tempo linear da história com o tempo circular do romance.
E é talvez o esquecimento que permite responder à pergunta do início. Será possível escrever de novo Cem anos de solidão? Por um lado, não. Este é o derradeiro romance sobre o novo mundo, um último livro de fundação. Hoje em dia o planeta é uma rede demasiado densa de cidades e experiências partilhadas: já não há um lugar pioneiro para fazer uma Macondo, e a memória da fundação já não existe nas gerações contemporâneas.
Por outro lado, é no outro tema do livro — o esquecimento —, um tema sempre procurado e fugidio, que há ainda um continente literário por explorar. Independentemente de onde viva e como viva, a humanidade tem tendência a apagar as suas memórias desconfortáveis, e com isso a perder as experiências que lhe permitiriam aprender. A ilusão do poder e do controle, da coragem edo pioneirismo, não esconde no fundo a solidão partilhada em cada um de nós (partilhada por todos coincidirmos nela, mas tendo de a consumir sozinhos). É assim, numa espécie de distração com a nossa luta quotidiana, que hipotecamos o nosso presente e perdemos o nosso futuro. De pai para filho. Do gelo às formigas.
